And yes, that's the kiddie trailer in the lower right corner of the photo. And in the upper right, you can see the shadow of Betsy on her bike. We rode the Mission Trails again, but frankly it was a miserable ride.
I had very high hopes for the ride. For the first time, I packed snacks and drinks for the kids, hoping that it would give them something to look forward to when we made the turnaround. I decided not to push the distance or the pace, and to leave decisions like turnaround point, snack time, and speed to the kids. I remember my Dad pushing me to learn to water ski, and how frustrated I was when he continued to push even when I was ready to quit. I don't want my kids to remember our cycling trips in that way.
My plan was good, but the results were not. It was a frustrating ride. I want to vent and write about the details, but I won't, because my family reads the blog and someday my kids might too. What I will say is that it will get better. All days won't be as frustrating, and if I play my cards right, the kids will continue to enjoy the rides and help me to enjoy the rides too.

I think it's awesome that you're at least out there with them. That you didn't push it, after knowing it was frustrating, just goes to show your character.
Your family reads your blog? I don't think anybody in mine does.
Your gloves have lots more padding than mine. What kind are they?
I had the same sweaty glove problem last week. They were soaked clean through, and then my bar tape got soaked. Washing the gloves helps a bit.
sweaty gloves are the worst. Sometimes I take them off for a while because they bug me too much. Keep it up with the kids. They'll get the hang of it.
Hmmm, it's kind of like when my Husband and I (not our Daughter, as you might think) take out the tandem. It's the best idea, until we do it. We also know, we'll get better at it. :)
It'll get better. There will be days when they just don't want to be there, and others when they do. You've got the right attitude.
Being one of the said family members and also a member of the "I got laid off club", I personally enjoy your blog about cycling, which I know little about, and about the family members that I miss dearly. Blog away BIL, I like knowing I am not frustrated alone!
act that you put a pic of your sweaty glove.....made me laugh - must remember to put more interesting pics on my blog.....
"Kids and bike training" - both set to test our perseverance and determination......mind you I just have the bike - and sweaty gloves...but not at the moment, we are having a cold snap here and I am inside with the central heating on......
I agree with Bryan - you're doing something with your children that they will likely remember as positive. My dad use to push me too and at times I hated him for it. Now, I love him for it. I ride a bike cause he taught me to and kicked my butt out the door to go ride. Oh, and he reads my blog, but I don't ever censor myself. I figure that if he or anyone else doesn't like it, don't read it.
